WA's EV Numbers Jump 66%: What the Growth Means for the Pilbara

Electric vehicles are no longer a small part of Western Australia’s transport story.

New figures released by Transport WA show the number of licensed light electric vehicles in WA has grown by almost 66% in just 12 months, climbing from 38,110 vehicles in June 2025 to 63,241 vehicles by the end of June 2026.

And the pace is accelerating.

During the June 2026 quarter alone, 10,727 EVs were newly licensed in Western Australia, accounting for approximately 24% of all new light vehicle licences issued across the State.

For us at Red Dog Renewables, these numbers reinforce something we’ve been seeing on the ground for some time.

Electric transport is moving quickly, and regional WA needs the infrastructure, expertise and local capability to move with it.

EV Growth Isn’t Just a Perth Story

One of the most encouraging parts of the latest figures is that EV adoption continues to expand beyond metropolitan Perth.

Several regional areas recorded quarterly EV growth above 20% during the June quarter.

As more electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles make their way into regional communities, the conversation naturally shifts from simply buying an EV to supporting one.

Where will it be charged?

Who will service it?

What happens when a business wants to transition multiple fleet vehicles?

Can electric vehicles perform in remote and demanding operating environments?

These are particularly important questions here in the Pilbara, where heat, distance, red dirt and remote operations are part of everyday life.

Building EV Capability Here in Karratha

This is exactly why Red Dog Renewables has continued investing in local EV capability.

From our EV Servicing Centre in Karratha, we’re helping provide the infrastructure and expertise needed to support the growing number of electric and hybrid vehicles operating throughout the region.

Our capability extends beyond simply supplying an electric vehicle.

We provide businesses with access to EV fleet hire, mine-spec and remote-ready vehicles, specialist EV and hybrid servicing, charging infrastructure, off-grid charging solutions and ongoing local support.

For Pilbara businesses considering transitioning part or all of their fleet, having that capability locally can make a significant difference.

Instead of relying solely on metropolitan support, businesses can access expertise right here in the region where their vehicles actually operate.

What Does 66% Growth Mean for Pilbara Businesses?

The increase in WA EV numbers doesn’t mean every vehicle in every fleet needs to become electric tomorrow.

What it does show is the direction transport is heading.

For businesses, now is an opportunity to start asking questions.

Could a town run-around be replaced with an EV?

Could an electric or plug-in hybrid ute suit part of your operation?

Could EVs help reduce exposure to fluctuating fuel costs?

What charging infrastructure would your site need?

And could hiring or trialling an EV provide real-world information before making a larger fleet investment?

Fleet transition doesn’t have to happen overnight. In many cases, the smartest approach is to identify where electric vehicles make operational sense and start there.

From City Vehicles to Pilbara Workhorses

One of the biggest changes we’ve seen in the EV sector is the growing diversity of vehicles available.

Electric transport is no longer limited to small passenger cars designed primarily for metropolitan driving.

Businesses can now explore everything from efficient vehicles for local travel through to utes, four-wheel drives, plug-in hybrids and specialist electric equipment.

At Red Dog Renewables, we’ve been putting that technology to work in real Pilbara environments.

It’s an important part of what we do because specifications on paper only tell part of the story.

We want to understand how new technology performs in the conditions our clients actually operate in.

The Vehicles Are Growing. The Infrastructure Needs to Grow With Them.

WA now has more than 63,000 licensed light EVs on the road.

That number will continue to change, but one thing is clear: as electric vehicle adoption grows, the ecosystem surrounding those vehicles needs to grow too.

That means more charging infrastructure.

More trained technicians.

More specialist servicing capability.

More regional knowledge.

And more businesses with the confidence to explore whether electric transport can work for their operations.

That’s the capability we’re continuing to build here in Karratha.

Because the future of transport shouldn’t require the Pilbara to wait for solutions to arrive from somewhere else.

We believe they should be built right here.

Cleaner. Smarter. Pilbara tough.
